Tessa's Take: Minimalist Mince Packaging
Tessa Stuart
I bought this in my Waitrose supermarket today. Minimalist mince packaging, it's like an inflated pillow of film with the mince inside (packaged in a protective atmosphere). This new packaging uses 50% less plastic than the previous version.
Well done, Waitrose. Now I don't have to throw away rigid plastic meat packaging, which goes straight to landfill and makes me feel guilty. Waitrose save money on packaging, I have less waste.
Win win.
Now if they can get to biodegradable cornstarch, which can still hold together on its journey through the supply chain, that would be the ultimate.
Other than buying my mince wrapped in greaseproof paper from the butcher. (And yes, I have done that too. But then I need to have it wrapped again in a plastic bag, because I worry about leakage in my bag/fridge. So the new Waitrose solution is better.)
Off to eat spaghetti bolonnaise now.
